Great sampler once properly updated
I bought the 1010 Music Bento because I wanted to replace my heavy MPC-1000 for live use. I needed a versatile portable sampler, that could play multiple samples at the time unlike my novation circuit Rhythm which plays each sample monophonically.
My goal was to resample all my favorite sounds into a smaller, battery-powered machine with multisampling capabilities, so I could build a lightweight live rig.
I understand why some older reviews say the unit is buggy or unfinished, because my very first experience was similar. At first, I loaded the new OS files without launching the upgrade, and the machine was crashing, audio was clicking, and everything felt unstable.
But after properly installing firmware version 1.4.3, the experience completely changed.
Instead of using the demo projects, I immediately created an empty project and started sampling my own gear and building my own kits.
Sampling is extremely smooth and straightforward: you can set sample length, pre-counting, trim waveforms, edit samples quickly, etc.
The editing tools are simple, but honestly that’s exactly what I wanted.
I recorded all my MPC-1000 samples on the Bento, so I have the old sound i like into a much more portable machine.
So far I’ve sampled sounds from my Digitone, DrumBrute, and other machines, and I’m genuinely impressed.
My current bento project includes:
3 drum kits
2 multisampled instruments
2 external tracks
The machine handles it very well, taking not more than 60 percent cpu.
The pads also feel really good to play.
One thing I hope improves in future updates is audio input management. On the 1010music Bluebox, for example, you can split a stereo input into two mono sources using a split cable. On the Bento, you currently choose either stereo or mono input, and mono takes the left channel only. Its great to integrate few mono synths.
I’d also love features like:
per-channel EQ
more advanced mixer functions
MIDI learn mode for assigning parameters externally
That said, the developers are extremely active. Updates are moving fast, there is already a beta firmware 1.5 with sequencer improvements, XY FX, and they clearly listen to users through Discord feedback.
Overall, if you want a portable sampler focused on fast sampling, drum kits, multisamples, battery power, and with a solid connectivity, I think this machine is genuinely excellent, especially once updated properly.
Also I spent a bit of time playing with looper tracks, and it is a super smooth experience.
A lot of the negative reviews seem based on early buggy firmware experiences. After two days with it, I honestly love it, and I think it has huge potential as the firmware evolves.
It is a versatile machine, perfect to create your own palette of sounds.
