Everything for the double bass in a very light cube
PCPlod 16.06.2026
I've been looking to buy a light combo for the double bass. What attracted me to this is that you can mix the two channels, with phantom power on board. I use a piezo (Realist copper head) and a microphone (Ovid). You can plug them both in, turn on the phantom for the mic and then mix to your heart's content so that you get the best of both worlds. I'm not sure why but this works best with piezo in channel 1 and mic in channel 2.

The unit is incredibly light (it says 8.8 kilos) and given that you get a 12" woofer, the sound is clean, undistorted with plenty of headroom (cab is listed as 500W RMS at 8 Ohms and head 800W @ 4 Ohms).

I was put off by other reviews (here on the Thomann site and on the TalkBass forums) for a while but the reality when I took the plunge was very positive.

I cannot compare it to Acoustic Image as they're not on the market any more. Even second-hand ones are very rare and very expensive. The GR bass cube is not cheap - you can see why so many bassists play through MarkBass combos. However, if like me, you want to use both a mic (requiring phantom power) and a piezo to get a double bass sound as opposed to an electric bass sound, I can't think of many alternatives. This is, after all, designed specifically for the double bass and unlike Acoustic Image, brand new with a five-year guarantee, and probably still cheaper.

The manual isn't particularly useful - I'm not sure what some of the knobs do (e.g. Notch Filter, Freq Notch) but I suppose others will know what to do with these. Up to now I've just tested it for one jazz gig (acoustic drums, piano and two saxophones with a PA for vocals and flute) and it was good.

I'm having to play and learn with it to get the best combination but I think anything is possible and that many settings have to be changed for the room in which you play, but that's to be expected.

It is hand-made in Italy and for me that's a bonus, at least my Euros are staying in Europe and not going to another economy.
