A Beautiful Instrument With Great Sound
This is a beautiful instrument, with a full sound. I would say it sits somewhere between a guitar, a harp and a banjo in terms of sound, and it has the oriental flavour, especially when using some specialized techniques like right hand trills, and some left hand bends and vibrato. If you like simple music, and traditional oriental ("zen") music, this instrument can give you many hours of relaxing time I believe.
The pipa may be a bit more expressive (can bend notes further and trills can be more expressive I think) but it is also a higher pitched instrument in general. If pipa was female, this would be the male counterpart.
Anyway, if you like the sound of this intrument, and enjoying exploring new soundscapes and especially traditional oriental music, than this is a good buy. It is well made also. I presume there are better quality, or more elaborate ones, but still this is still a beautifully crafted and perfectly suited instrument, especially for the price. When people see it and hear it they all say it is beautiful and it sounds good spontaneously, so this must be a good thing!
Case is also nice. Not hard but still provides good protection. Comes with finger picks and also a plectrum. I got the extra string set as well to keep as replacement, as I presume I would need them at some point.

superbe
instrument de très belle facture, qui sonne incroyablement bien une fois qu'on le maîtrise, et très polyvalent, on peut jouer de tout en adaptant le registre de la guitare à ses 4 cordes! Il est lourd, épais et très esthétique, c'est incroyable à ce prix. Il rappelle le cistre renaissance, qu'on a oublié depuis longtemps, nous qui avons standardisé (appauvri) tout et réduit considérablement le nombre de nos instruments. Les Chinois savent conserver les trésors de leur passé, eux!

Meditativ, klangstark und ästhetisch
Ich habe mir die Ruan geholt, weil ich bereits mit anderen Saiteninstrumenten in Open Tunings spiele. Sie hat etwas von einer Irish Bouzouki, aber eben nicht nur.
Zunächst zum Klang. In GDgd gestimmt singt das Instrument bereits in voller Resonanz, ohne überhaupt erst darauf zu spielen. Die Bässe, Mitten und Höhen sind klar und stark, wie bei einer hochwertigen Gitarre. Lang hallt der Ton nach, jeder einzelne Ton klingt sauber, ohne Scheppern und Scharren. Dadurch hat sie einen irre guten Sound.
Zur Bespielbarkeit: Die hochstehenden Bundstäbchen wirken ja erstmal ungewohnt, jedoch greifen sich einzelne Töne sowie Akkorde so gut, dass man es beim anschließenden Spiel auf europäischen Flachhälsen schon beinahe vermisst. Schnell gelingen erste Melodien, selbst das ausprobieren und improvisieren klingt bereits meditativ. Sie kann sehr laut und kräftig genau so gut wie piano - und alles dazwischen auch. Dabei kann sie asiatisch, europäisch mittelalterlich (wahnsinnig stark) und sogar bluesig klingen. Alle gängigen Gitarrentechniken funktionieren einwandfrei.
Verarbeitet ist das Instrument ebenfalls gut. Bis auf wenige unauffällige Farblãufe, Einschlüsse und Kleberpatzer stört nichts den ästhetischen Gesamteindruck. Das Instrument ist groß, wuchtig und schwer, genau so, wie es klingt. Die Mechanik arbeitet sehr präzise und ist sehr stimmstabil.
Ein tolles, auffälliges Instrument mit bemerkenswerten klanglichen Eigenschaften, die einem sofort in den Bann ziehen.
