Good at 94, but 114 dB Shows Excessive Distortion
I purchased the AZ 8930 primarily for SPL calibration of a measurement microphone used with Room EQ Wizard (REW). Overall, the unit is easy to use, feels reasonably well built, and provides three useful calibration levels: 94, 104 and 114 dB at 1 kHz.
I tested the calibrator using a Dayton Audio iMM-6C measurement microphone with the appropriate 1/2-inch calibration adapter.
The measured frequency was approximately 997.4 Hz, which is also well within the manufacturer's stated tolerance.
However, distortion increased significantly as the output level was raised:
94 dB: approximately 0.32% THD
104 dB: approximately 0.96% THD
114 dB: approximately 3.09% THD
At 114 dB, the distortion is dominated by the second harmonic and slightly exceeds the manufacturer's stated total distortion specification of less than 3%.
