Works directly from an XLR output on the mixer.
I have two, one Rockboard HA 1 and this one, which is passive. And honestly, I regret buying the Rockboard HA 1 because this one sounds great. Directly from the mixer's AUX output, it has plenty of volume.

Rock Solid
I use this with a presonus 4x Headphones amp, and its brilliant. It's built like a tank, all metal, I've dropped it (heavily) a few times & it knocks nothing out of it. Best of all - no batteries [but u need a Headphones amp]. If it got nicked I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
