They do help keeping some unwanted overtones under control or make you drums have a dryer overall sound, but the only downside is that with time they get greasy, sticky and stain with rubber residue your drumhead. Also they are a dirt magnet and are not very easy to wash and reuse, as they loose grip eventually. But they are ok if you replace them on a couple of months timeframe, but who does that? :)
